Obesity Conference 2017 – Promoting Healthy Lifestyles: 13 Dec 2017

http://www.salford.ac.uk/onecpd/courses/the-obesity-conference-and-exhibition

Two thirds of adults in England are classed as overweight or obese costing the NHS an estimated £6.1 billion a year. With obesity rates increasing among children, this growing public health crisis could become unmanageable in the future without meaningful intervention now. As the NHS strives to put itself on a more sustainable footing, a multifaceted prevention based approach to obesity is needed. This will require greater collaboration between the NHS, local authorities and the private sector as well as measures to address food consumption, lack of exercise and poor lifestyle choices.
Join us for the Obesity Conference 2017 where expert speakers will discuss the latest approaches to the growing crisis in public health. Understand the underlying causes of obesity and how to combat them, observe methods for influencing behaviour and improving public health through prevention and see how different organisations can collaborate to find solutions to the obesity problem.

Impact of Obesity on Health

RCP CPD approved for 5 credits. Code 100727

http://doctorsacademy.org/Course/Obesity/Home.htm

Date: 14th November 2015 (Saturday)

Time: 0900 – 1630

Venue : Mayo Building, Salford Royal Foundation Trust

Fee: Free to all healthcare professionals. Places are limited and will be offered on a ‘first-come-first-served’ basis.

Aimed at: General Practitioners, Physicians, Surgeons, Specialist Nurses and Dieticians with interest in obesity and bariatric surgery.

Description: Currently we are amidst an epidemic of obesity that is likely to worsen over the years as predicted by the ‘Foresight report for tackling obesity’. The crux of the problem is an imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure.

The physical and psychological drivers inherent in human biology mean that the vast majority of us are predisposed to gaining weight.

Obesity not only leads to multiple comorbidities such as diabetes, sleep apnoea, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular risk, stroke, arthritis and increased risk of cancer but also results in poor quality of life and impacts longevity.

Hence there is an urgent need for awareness and action at every level and not least the medical fraternity.

The purpose of this study day is to increase awareness and to review the current evidence and practice in the management of obesity. The day will also feature the establishment of a voluntary organisation “Greater Manchester Obesity Awareness and Support” with a view to share our knowledge and to develop strategies to tackle the obesity epidemic.

Feedback from previous courses

We e-mailed all the delegates of our previous course and asked them to write to us with their exam results. Everyone who e-mailed us back has passed the exam.

“Your course was very good, though I think your questions were harder. Though the exam did not cover the epidemiology, screening I thought they were excellent sessions.
It was a well run course and excelllnet value for money.I would recommend it highly for anyone doing the exam.”

“The course had been extremely helpful for the exam and I am really thankful to you all.
It would have been even more useful if it was held a bit earlier as I realised I needed to do a lot to get there but did not have enough time left.
Any way I will let you know ones results are back as I feel I may have done a lot of silly mistakes.”

“I felt your course was good preparation and would recommend it to others. I’d suggest some questions on treating hyperparathyroidism in renal impairment.”

“I passed, big thanks to you !!!!”

“I am a … based in … (got special interest in diabetes) attended your course and just now received the pass result -I have passed (1st attempt) . Many thanks for all you help and advice. It really helped.”

RCPE Course: Writing a Journal Article

Dear Colleague

RCPE Course: Writing a Journal Article
Monday 3 November 2014

Clinicians regularly submit papers for publication which, while containing excellent and original clinical detail, may be rejected as soon as they are received by an editor or are put out for peer review. This situation can be demoralising and lead to an author questioning his or her work.

The Writing a Journal Article course aims to assist clinicians in improving their publication rates and/or the level of journal in which their papers appear. It provides valuable insights into how to plan, structure, develop and write a scientific paper; information on what editors and reviewers look for in papers; and original analyses of trends in medical publishing.

This one-day course is for anyone who is writing – or drawing together material for – an article for a peer reviewed journal. It would be of particular value to doctors in training interested in getting onto the first rung of the publications ladder and to consultants or GPs interested in publishing and disseminating original research in higher impact journals. Additionally, experienced authors may wish to recommend the course to less experienced co-authors.

Previous courses at RCPE have been oversubscribed and early application is therefore advised. Full details are available on the College website or by contacting Helen Elliott at the College (email h.elliott@rcpe.ac.uk or call 0131 247 3639) .
